Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/30/2007

Number: 1

Finally - after several days of watching I am seeing small groups of monarchs roosting in the treeline. They started to appear in the yard at 6:15pm and, after what appeared to be much chasing about, started serious roosting and flashing behavior by 6:30pm. By 6:45pm I located 4 small groups of butterflies (4-8 per group)- all facing east yet still catching the rays of setting sun. Each roost sight was 12-15 off the ground under good canopy. One group of 4 was clustered together on a bare branch of an oak tree, while the others were on fully leafed branches of a sugar maple nearby.
