This has been a summer of excitement, busy activity, and LOTS of Monarchs. My efforts to grow a larger and more permanent milkweed garden was very successful, and I have many seeds that I hope to plant to continue for years to come. Dozens of eggs have been laid on my plants and just as many caterpillars have feasted most of the summer. The egg-laying started in mid-July and continues to date. I have reared dozens of caterpillars and have witnessed the adult butterflies emerging many times now. I never tire of the event! Now that I am back teaching, my students are learning about the monarchs and both their places and responsibilities in the circle of life. I am also participating in a lab study through the Univ of Ga concerning parasite growth on adults. I tested and then released 5 adults just yesterday to see how the process will work best with my students.
