Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 08/31/2007

Number: 1

When I visited La Crosse Airport last, on August 31, there were
thousands of Monarch Butterflies nectaring on rough blazing star. Both
the butterfly and the plant were probably at the greatest
densities I've seen. I walked onto the prairie through the pine
plantation, and it took me a moment to realize I was walking through an
aisle of monarchs. They were actually roosting in the pine trees, like
they do in Mexico. Having been at the wintering grounds in February,
this was very evocative of that experience. Unfortunately, I wasn't
prepared for this. It would have been a great opportunity to tag
specimens.
