Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/08/2007

Number: 1

Holiday Beach,
Ontario, Canada,

Sept.9

Sunday started out miserably. It rained most of the night. At 5:30 am Holiday Beach was soaked. It was a steamy, hot and humid morning. By 9:30 I saw our first Monarch flutter by. The sun wasn't out and didn't make an appearance until 11:30 but one after two after three then four and five Monarchs were starting to stir. The early migration resumed by noon. This time a bit lower and many more grabbing nectar where they could before the jaunt over the Detroit River. I have never experienced a 2-day migration like this in the park. We left the park at 4 pm and hundreds of Monarchs were still passing us by.

Sept.8

There was a steady stream of hundreds of Monarch Butterfly every hour all day through the whole range of height of flight, even up with the Turkey Vultures.

Two days at Holiday Beach and we couldn't even keep track of the numbers of Monarchs. It began Saturday, (Sept 8). The Monarchs were high, very high. Down at the passerine station, we were seeing the same marvelous migration. Some did come down to nectar but for the most part, Monarchs were on their mission. Blue skies and orange and black definitively showing directionality. This is a bit early to see this kind of movement. This generally happens mid-month.

Sept.5
Only 18 Monarch were noted in 8.5 hours at the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory
