Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/09/2007

Number: 1

About six o'clock in the evening, I was outside in my backyard. I noticed quite a few Monarch butterflies and then realized they were all flying to one particular tree in our backyard. They were hanging in bunches on the ends of several branches. I got my camera and took many pictures, which I have to share with you, if you'd like. (Because it was cloudy, they aren't as good as I would like, but aren't too bad either.) We had a rain last night and I was afraid they might be gone this a.m., but when I looked, many remain, although not all. It is still cloudy and wet, but if it clears, I will take some more pictures. Estimated count: 500-1,000?

September 23rd Update
Because of the rain, I think many of the Monarchs left during
that first night (9/9/07), but there was still one branch that was full most of the
next day. After that, they all left and although I've still seen quite a
few in the area, I haven't figured out if any are staying overnight around
here. They haven't been in any of my trees...
