Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/09/2007

Number: 1

We saw monarchs gathering in red maple trees between 7:15 and 7:45pm two nights in a row (9/9 and 9/10) near our home in Canaan Valley, WV. There are large fields around our house with lots of blooming goldenrod and asters. The valley is at a high elevation (at least for the east) at 3200 feet and has large areas of fields and open wetlands in a stretch of the Appalachian Mountains where forests are dominant.

The butterflies were gathering in large maples in at least two areas. We had had many days in a row of hot calm weather. Yesterday and last night a strong cold front passed through bring winds from north and I suspect we will not see them roosting tonight!
