Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/08/2007

Number: 1

Last seen dates for ruby-throated hummingbirds:

We observed males at two different feeders in Thorndike ME about 5 miles apart between 0600 and 0655 22 AUG 2007. Observed last male at my home feeder on morning of 25 August 2007. This male was much less territorial and tolerated female and young without aggression for the past 4 days.

Then we watched 1 female and 2 immature birds each day until 31 AUG 2007. The immature birds remained, but the adult female was not seen in September.

Then the immature birds stayed the next week and were seen feeding regularly at sugar water feeders through 7 SEP 2007. On 8 SEP 2007 only 1 immature bird made a single visit to the feeders in mid afternoon. We think this last bird was not a resident, for it did not approach the feeder as assuredly as the residents and did not perch at any of the common sites when it rested momentarily after feeding.

No hummers seen since 8 SEP 2007 even though sugar water feeders are still present.
