As usual I picked Monarch caterpillars for the first and second grade classrooms. This year there were fewer than last, but enough. For the first time I found a chrysalis in the field. For the first time I found larvae on narrow leaved milkweed as well as common milkweed. And for the first time the fields seemed alive with bright new monarchs getting ready to make their flight. (The numbers made me think that picking up caterpillars might have been easier a couple of weeks ago!) But, 16 area classrooms in 3 schools will be watching the miracle of metamorphisis and with luck releasing more bright Monarchs for the journey south.
