Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/14/2007

Number: 1

Monarchs have been ovipositing on Asclepias viridis at the Choctaw Trails site in southwest Jackson, MS since August 20. Clinton Park Elementary is rearing 40 larvae hatched from eggs collected at Choctaw Trails, and this afternoon (Sept. 14) several females were laying eggs on the milkweed sprigs; some 1st and 2nd instar larvae were present along with numerous eggs. Milkweed is in such poor condition due to drought that most larvae are unlikely to complete development under natural conditions.
