Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/23/2007

Number: 1

Working with local kids and some parents, I tagged just over 20 butterflies on the banks of the Hudson River in Manhattan NY [the real Manhattan!!] from 16 to 18:30 h. this evening. Just before 18:30 h, I saw a butterfly fly up to the branch of an oak tree. I assume that 6-30 pm today was the witching hour when Monarchs settle in for the night, for no other monarch appeared on our Buddleia after that. Exactly week ago, the witching hour seemed to strike about 17:30 h. I am curious to know what triggers this settling in for the night, but have not had a chance to read up on it.
