Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/24/2007

Number: 100

From Sat. Sept. 22 through Monday Sept. 24, we had those strong south winds and warm temperatures that kept the Monarchs from traveling. the numbers built steadily over those days. On Sat., there were several dozen. By Sunday evening, there were over 100 roosting in the trees.

Monday, during the day, the New England asters, zinnias, and cosmos were covered with them. Approximately 300 roosting that night. Over night, a cold front came through, bringing a breeze from the north. By 9:00 Tuesday morning, the butterflies were gone. This morning, I saw a lone Monarch nectaring at an aster.
