Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2007

Number: 1

A beautiful clear and calm day, temperature in the 70's. For one hour from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., I counted 30 butterflies. Almost all of the butterflies were drifting low over the yards and came to nectar on the flowers.

From 1:30 to 2:30, I counted 47 Monarchs, with 26 of these coming in an arial burst in less than 10 minutes at 2:00 p.m. I wonder if this was a group that had roosted together somewhere. They were all flying at the same level, high over the trees (about 75 feet) and spread out within an area of sky of about 300 feet wide. They sailed by on a light northery breeze.

After that arial display, the remaining Monarchs observed were those that came drifting into the yard to nectar.
