Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/23/2007

Number: 1000

Today, Sunday was another stellar day for monarchs arriving in Cape May. All day long monarchs dropped out of the sky and many stopped to nectar or rest. Around 5 pm we went down to the point and hiked around; found one large roosting area--at least 15 trees had many monarchs flying in (well over a 1000 is my guess though I am not good with the numbers). Alot of walking to check out all the favorite roosting areas. Found several smaller roosts 12-30 and by the time we got back to the large roosting area, it was getting dark so we couldn't clearly see the size of the roost; they were, however, from low to quite high up into the trees. Magnificent! The next day, most seemed to have moved on.
