Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/19/2007

Number: 1

Today was the best day for Monarchs at Point Lepreau that I have seen during the two years I've been tagging them, and likely as good as any day since we built the observatory in 1995. I was able to catch the seven Monarchs I needed for tagging in about six and a half minutes. Afterward I did a 15-minute walk around the east and west sides of the Point and counted 52 more nectaring Monarchs. During the same period Jean kept watch at the observatory and counted 20 others that were migrating past without stopping.
So there was a good flow of butterflies there today, probably upward of 100 actually present at the time, and turning over constantly (all seven tagged individuals flew west immediately). If we had had more tags, we could have had quite a productive day, but our Monarch tagging for summer 2007 is now completed.
