Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2007

Number: 1

Another BIG wave of Monarchs came through here today. They started early as well; the first one I saw was at 8:10 AM. I was at work most of the day, but I still saw 28 while on a couple of breaks outside. The total I could see today was 255 in 2 1/2 hours total. We spotted many solitary fliers, but also groups of 2, 3, 4, and three groups of 5!! I really thought we'd seen the majority come through here last week. I'm happy that proved to be so wrong. I got a call this morning from a good friend (while I was at work) who said they had counted just over a thousand during their drive. They were 5-7 miles south of Ponca City driving around on country roads. The weather here was fantastic today with very light winds this AM slowly increasing this afternoon from various directions, but predominately from the south on towards evening. High temp today I think was around 83 F.
