Signs of Fall

Date: 10/01/2007

Number: 1

A few days after our hummers left, new migratory birds came in, until there were more than we could count. We calculated more than 60 birds; we had to go buy another feeder! Over the past 2-3 days the numbers have dropped again, yesterday we only had about a dozen at the most at any one time. The yellow jackets' food supply must be diminished because they have become a problem at the feeders for the first time. The summer garden is plowed under, the fall garden is planted. The persimmons are ripening. The cotton is being picked, the rice cut, the corn long since stripped. The soybean harvest is underway. Soon the winter wheat will go in and turn the fields green again. The blackbirds are beginning to flock. I hear the cardinal singing outside as I type this just at dawn. Some mornings there is almost a nip in the air, but overall the weather is still quite warm, up to the ninety's in the day.
