Observations made today - Oct. 1/07
Near the hamlet of Wicklow, east of Cobourg near the north shore of Lake Ontario, most of the milkweed was turning yellow, but a few green plants remained from which to collect leaves. On a number of the milkweed plants were 4th and 5th instar larva - I found 3 but could have found more. I also spotted 2 pristine adult female monarchs. Also a pristine mourning cloak.
At Presqu'ile, birder Maureen Rigg reports that out on Gull Island yesterday, she saw about a dozen monarchs, red admirals and cabbage whites.
At Cranberry Marsh near Whitby, just east of Toronto, I found one adult monarch and 2 red admirals.
We may get some rain overnight, but from now to the end of the weekend, warm and sunny weather
