Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2007

Number: 1

I got a call this morning from a good friend who said they counted just over a thousand monarchs in just 30 minutes. They were 5-7 miles south of Ponca City driving around on country roads. If those figures are really accurate, that's a rate of 33.3 per minute. They were driving in the wide open spaces. The butterflies were low to the ground, mid-level, and many were quite elevated as well!

I have a quick clarification on the above report. My friend told me that he spotted, counted, and semi-estimated the number of Monarchs they saw on their drive south of our town was about 1000 in a short time of 30 minutes. If those figures are really accurate, that's a rate of 33.3 per minute. I've never had that good of luck. One thing to remember is that they were in the wide open spaces. He related that they were low to the ground, mid-level, and many were quite elevated as well!
