Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/17/2007

Number: 1000

For the last couple weeks [middle of Sept.]at our woods near Ossian, Indiana we've had a Monarch Butterfly convention. During the day there would hundreds circling in the air maybe 20-50 feet off the ground. One night at dusk we noticed in a Shagbark Hickory tree they were clinging to the leaves in an apparent attempt to roost. We estimated over 1000 Monarchs in that one tree. I know they migrate in groups in coastal California and Mexico, but Ossian? What's going on? Any reports of this before around here?
