While beginning to water my plants this morning, I was horrified to see a monarch caught in a spider web right where I was about to start! I immediately dropped the hose and gently grabbed the web at the spot where it was struggling. It took 3 attempts to clear off all the webbing...each time I thought I'd been successful, the poor thing flopped to the ground, still too sticky! Finally, I got it all cleared off, and the happy monarch flew up and away! Whew! What a relief...my first time having to do that! (By the way, the butterfly was a good bright healthy one...not any sign of wear & tear!) During the rest of the day, there were 3 more monarchs enjoying the zinnias, salvia and butterfly bushes in the yard...not in any hurry to fly away...needed to fatten up I guess! (One did look a bit worn with wing tips missing.) Saw a couple of others around town while out. All were just flitting about ...no directional flying.
