Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/08/2007

Number: 300

The Monarch Butterflies started coming into Bronte on a small cool front Monday evening October 8th. We were in the school parking lot and looked up to see dozens of Monarchs flutter by. They did not seem to be as large as usual. On Tuesday, October 9th we drove by their roost in the North East corner of town where big pecan trees grow near the Kickapoo Creek. This area lies between two homes just two blocks East of Highway 277 as it crosses the Kickapoo. They were few in number on this day. I will check after school today. Usually there are thousands of Monarchs, big and healthy at this Roost. So far only a few hundred have arrived in town and in the park.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating 300 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “a few hundred.”
