Monarch Fall Roost

Tagged Monarch Discovered in Texas!

October 8

The Monarchs arrived in significant numbers today. Large numbers roost in the pecan trees in my back yard every year. If the past is an indication, they will increase in number until the next strong cold front moves through.

October 10

Today they number in the low thousands (probably two thousand).

October 11

I found a butterfly with a tag, number JEX934. (See photo below!) The tagged monarch came from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 852 miles away. It was tagged on August 22nd so traveled for 47 days.

October 15

Between 9:30am & 10:00 am this morning the Monarchs left their roost and headed south. This was about five and one half hours after a cold front passed through the Grape Creek area.
