Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/11/2007

Number: 1

From last weekend until yesterday (October 6 - 10), our students have seen about 51 monarchs in their backyards and in their communities. The weather has been unseasonably warm, in the high 80s and mid-90s, with cooler evenings in the 60s. However, fall weather, and fall temperatures as well, has arrived today. It is overcast and cool, in the low 50s with tonight's temperatures predicted for the mid-40s.

In addition, we have a lady in central North Carolina who is also observing for us. She called today and reported that she saw one in her flowerbeds of coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and other wildflowers. She said the weather was in the mid 80s and was sunny and breezy.

The students observed that they saw more monarchs whenever the weather was warmer and especially whenever it was breezy.
