Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/12/2007

Number: 1

I have seen 2-7 monarchs on every good butterfly day since 22 AUG 2007. I have yet to see what I might describe as a peak migration day. Very few monarchs seem intent on migration. Only individuals seen between 0845 and 1030 hours have been obviously migrating intentionally. After 1000 hrs most are wandering about but erratically to the SW, nectaring, drifting off toward the SW and then circling back, or just meandering aimlessly. We found a pupa 7 OCT 2007 and brought it inside to watch development and perhaps hatching. This chrysalis is still attached to a stalk of white clover that is pinned to a curtain in our living room. An adult monarch emerged on 16 OCT 2006 from a chrysallis formed by a caterpillar that we fed from stage 2. We will report if the pupa we now are watching successfully emerges as an adult.
