Stiff southerly winds stalled Monarchs in Wichita Falls, TX today (Oct. 12). Staffers at River Bend Nature Center tagged 24 individuals--16 males, 8 females--between about 10:30 a.m. cdt and noon at Waystation #1562. Misses, near misses & premature escapes outnumbered successful captures by at least 4 to 1. While Monarch numbers were somewhat less than seen on Oct. 10, Monarchs were moving among the soapberry, pecan, cedar and cottonwood trees in our bottomland, feeding on milkweed and hyacinth. Skies were mostly cloudy, temp. around 78 degrees F, wind South at 10-15.
