Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/11/2007

Number: 1

Our class has asked a friend who lives in a rural section of east-central North Carolina to contact us whenever she observes monarchs in her area. She is wheel-chaired bound, and she often sits on her porch, observing the local wildlife that visits her flower gardens.

On Thursday, October 11, she reported to us that she saw a pair of monarchs hovering over her wildflowers and then flying southwest. She said it was a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures in the mid-80s. Several hours later, around 5:15 PM she observed another pair flying southwest as well. About an hour later, she saw four more, but they were roosting in the trees near her house. She said that by then, the weather was changing; it was very breezy and cooler, and it was overcast as if it were ready to rain (which it did).

Our class has been charting the number of butterflies we observe in our yards and also comparing them to the ones that she is communicating to us. We are comparing number, weather, and temperature.
