Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/19/2007

Number: 1

Saw the last monarchs on September 19, 20 and 21. The rotting pears under our front yard pear tree, drew nearly a dozen each evening. I wasn't sure if they were lingering or migrating new ones. They would settle on the pears dodging aggressive wasps and bees who were busy sucking up pear juice.

It was a pretty sight to see them sitting quietly, wings stirring as they pumped up juice. I've never seen them do this before. I would notice them in the afternoon out in the meadow, under the wild apple trees nectaring on the fallen apples. They seem to take advantage of the holes scooped in the soft fruit by the wasps. Several times I followed a Monarch from the woods up to my garden, where they would take advantage of the flowers. Then, they seemed to scent the pears, after a few days our yard smells like a vinegar brewery.
