Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/16/2007

Number: 1

Amazingly there are still a few late emergers taking to the skies when the temperatures are up above 60 degrees. Watched two monarchs fairly high in the sky this morning sailing over the trees to the south.
I am still watching 3 chrysalises near the house and wondering if they will emerge or not. With light frosts a couple of nights there are fewer and fewer plants left to nectar on when the butterflies emerge.
Two weeks ago at the Plum Island beach on the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border we watched one or two an hour appear from over the ocean and flutter inland to nectar on a few remaining goldenrod plants.
