Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/17/2007

Number: 1

We haven't had as many monarch sightings this week. Yesterday, the students saw about 38 monarchs flying. Surprisingly, though, the weather was overcast, and there were scattered rainshowers in our region. The temperatures are in the mid60s.

This afternoon, as I was leaving school, around 4 PM, I saw a monarch fly into the flower garden near our entry. The monarch stopped and fed (I presume) from some of the remaining coneflowers, and, starting at the top of it, moved around the central cone of seeds, at one point, hanging upside down. I did manage to take a picture of it! It then flew towards me, spiraled around the flagpole, sailed close to the roof of the school, and flew south. Is this typical behavior? We will begin reading and researching!
