Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/19/2007

Number: 1

I was sitting in the line at the local bank at 4:02 pm CDT looking out west, and across the large lawn of the bank property, low and behold, I counted 10 Monarchs a minute for 5 minutes, all flying into the late afternoon early autumn setting sun. I watched this mini major flyover for Laurel, MS, for 5 minutes before having to leave the drive-thru lane. I saw a few more as I headed to the east side of town, right thru the oldest residential neighborhood. I have seen about 5 out here at the farm since around 3:15 p.m., all checking out
our large red oak trees still in good camo colors for Monarchs. They traditionally fly up there this time every year to roost for the night. We have tons of Gulf frittilaries, but, they were all hanging around the lantanas, both here and at the bank. I'll keep you posted for if I see more.
