Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/25/2007

Number: 30

I had seen several monarchs at the old runways here in Kingsville several years ago and thought that would be a good place to look for migrants now. I arrived about 8:15 this morning Oct 25. Being a firm believer of Murphy's Law, I left my camera in the car. While not the great numbers that have been reported, I did find about 30 roosting in a Lead Ball tree. By the time I retrieved my camera there were only three left. The remainder took off skyward even though the surrounding
fields were full of blooming crucita. A half hour later, Queens
started rising up out of the tall grass, and started nectaring on the crucita. (Courtesy of Mike Quinn, Texas Parks and Wildlife, from Texas Butterfly Liserv. Mike added: Some of the monarchs may have dispersed before the observer arrived.)
