Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/25/2007

Number: 2000

October 25

I would not even hazard a guess, but I do think I've seen thousands of them today. I am assuming that this is part of the peak in their migration. Some monarchs are spending the night in my neighbor's palm trees here in West Galveston, right near the Galveston Island State Park. My neighbor took pictures, but the monarchs are folded up and hanging from the brown ends of the leaves and are very hard to see. The neighbor said, "it is absolutely thrilling what is happening
in my area. I have lived on the coast for 7 years and never have I seen
this many monarchs. It truly is breathtaking."
They had slowed down a bit (5:30 pm), but they are still very dense. Please note there are many small butterflies--not monarchs--also in this group.

It's almost 9 am and the monarchs are almost gone today...just a few small ones going by our house so far this morning.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 2000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “thousands.”
