Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/25/2007

Number: 1

While taking a break at work downtown Houston Continental Airlines Headquarters, I noticed some monarchs flying towards the park accross the street. It just took seconds to realize something special was going on as a monarchs were descending out of the sky every 15-20 seconds from high altitude towards the park. It reminded me of a busy airport. I followed a few of them to one tree where to my surprise - the top of the tree was covered with them.

Time:evening - sunset

Activity: Monarchs were going to roost.

Numbers: Too many to count, arrival rate to tree every 15-20 seconds. Not sure how long, as I had to go back into work.
Wind direction out of the North, becoming variable, to calm after sunset. merc 2997 millibars 1014.9. Temp 65F, forecasted low 44F.
This is the tail end of the cold front that blew through for past 3 days.
