Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/24/2007

Number: 1

Today the flow of monarchs has been heavy and consistent!

Between 9:00 - 12 noon I was teaching at a school at the NE edge of Katy, Texas.
A steady stream of Monarchs flew directly over the school and garden area for the three hours I was there. Sometimes single monarchs and sometime groups of five or more together. The wind was brisk from the NW which made flying tough. At times I would watch individuals get caught in the wind and glide 50 feet to the east before starting to fly again in a SW direction. Some groups flew over very high above the school and some dropped down to just above our heads before catching a draft upward again.

At 12:30 I drove to I-10 and continued to see a steady flow over the road flying SW with the wind trying to beat them back.
