Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/27/2007

Number: 100

Today we went to South Padre Island and saw well over 100 monarchs at the Civic Center. There is a landscaped area there that attracts birds and butterflies. The monarchs were roosting although it was after noon, a sunny warm day. A few were flying away, but mostly the flying was short-lived as they tried to settle back on the roosts quickly after being disturbed. I caught a mating pair on camera. Then we went to Estero Llano Grande [SP] in Weslaco and saw dozens of monarchs, all nectaring on the Crucita and White Plumbago there. No monarchs roosting at Llano Grande.
