Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/28/2007

Number: 1

A friend reported that this morning she was sitting on the beach at Chincoteague NWR, Assateague Island VA and was seeing at least 1 monarch a minute coming off the water. The winds were, she reported, out of the west at about 30 miles per hour and she was feeling terrible seeing the monarchs struggle to get from the water to the seaside goldenrod beyond the beach to safety and nectaring -- she was trying to help a few get there, and having trouble getting a hold of them. Megan did say that the goldenrod was in pretty good bloom -- finally -- sure was late this year! It was sunny and only about 58 degrees today, the weather has been very rainy and foggy during their vacation up until today. Also she reported there were "quite a few" monarchs -- no number estimates -- nectaring in the golden rod, I would think they will stay there until they get their energy back and the winds die down.
