Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/26/2007

Number: 2000

October 26
I arrived in Port Lavaca last evening (10/26/07) at 4:30 and the river I'd been hoping to find all this migration was flowing across the causway east of town by the thousands. Harlen Aschen said they had been just that heavy ALL day long starting just before 10 a.m. Cars were poking across the causway and attempting to avoid the heaviest concentrations--with mixed success. It would easily have been many 1000s an hour for the first 100 yards of the eastern traffic lane. I was able to get some exciting photos of clusters after dark on shrubs and bushes along the shore on the leeward side. Many of the shrubs along the shore on both sides of the highway had such visitors last night.

Breezes this morning were from a compass heading of 22 degrees (NNE) and gusting up to 13.1 mph. Many monarchs continued to nectar on the coastal goldenrod, keeping low to the ground out of the wind. This location is just across the causway on the east side of the bay and across the highway from the Alcoa plant.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 2000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “thousands.”
