Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/25/2007

Number: 1000000

We vacationed last week at Bolivar Peninsula, Texas. One day (Oct. 25th), while surf fishing, we noticed millions of butterflies coming in to land on palm trees in the yard where we were staying. It was incredible. The palm trees were literally covered with beautiful monarchs. It was getting near sunset. A chilly night was predicted. The monarchs were quickly filling up the leeward side of some palm trees. When there were no leeward spots left, they would begin to fill another tree.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 1,000,000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “millions.”
