There were literally THOUSANDS of monarch butterflies by the Dirty Pelican Pier early this morning (10/29/07). Saw them flying on the beach just south of High Island last night coming back from Beaumont. Thanks to friends, I learned they'd be around at least until today & didn't miss out. Apparently they 'roosted' (if that's what butterflies do) in the bushes, salt cedars, & grasses along the shore overnight & this morning, as the sun dried the dew from their wings, they took to the air. The sky was filled with them.
Breathtaking sight. Gosh I LOVE our peninsula!! You never know what you might see.
Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 2000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “thousands.”
