Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 11/06/2007

Number: 1

We had a wind shift to the north early this morning, but the front didn't arrive until about 11:00 am with a blustery NNW wind. Nothing across the causeway on two trips before noon. Wind has been 15+ mph NNW-N all afternoon, gusts to 20, 74 dF, barometer 30.19, and is almost clear with a haze now.

Monarchs began to fight their way down the peninsula starting about 1:00. I counted from then to past 2:30 and there was a good flow. Best minute had 14 come past, best hour avg 132.
Not many are stopping to nectar. I netted two and they are in good shape. We may go back to see if there are some small evening clusters. Still strange, but I watched with binoculars out to the east over Alcoa lagoon and a good 10% want to turn around fly back to the NNE-NE, back to the bluff and trees where they had come from instead of continuing out across Lavaca Bay.
