I was on the coast south of the town of Cameron in SW La. on October 26, the Friday afternoon of the La. Ornithological Soc. meeting.
I spent about an hour near the jetties at the mouth of the Calcasieu Ship Channel and observed large numbers of monarchs feeding on the goldenrod and sea oxeye blooms. Others were flying slowly southward--some high in the air and some low. Buckeyes and Gulf fritillaries were also present, but monarchs were by far the most numerous. I didn't count the monarchs, but I'd estimate that I saw
50-80 during the hour that I birded at the jetties.
