Robin (First HEARD singing)

Date: 01/19/2008

Number: 1

One of our overwintering robins began to sing today. It was definitely the first few notes from the "Song" category (I listened to all six). I was shocked as it was in the early afternoon last weekend (1/19) and we've been having a very cold and snowy winter. But I believe this is the pair that has produced young in our yard for the past couple of years and maybe they are anxious for winter to get over and the breeding season to commence! Yesterday I watched the female drinking snow melt out of the rain gutter! I think the juniper berries kept them around this winter.
I'm including a picture of our rural yard (4 acres with mature habitat) and you can see why we have hundreds of birds here every winter...even more so when it is cold and snowy.
