Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/24/2007

Number: 1

Back at Riverbend Park just upstream from the more well-known Great Falls Park, checking on the Common Milkweed that I monitor every spring for 'first leaves'...the plants are about four feet tall now and have just begun to bloom. Am hopeful of finding my first Virginia Monarch, or at least of seeing signs of some having been there. And while I come up empty on both counts (couldn't locate any caterpillars or leaf-damage), I was thrilled to see this beautiful Great-spangled Fritillary nectaring, along with a Little Glassywing (a skipper-type butterfly) and a fuzzy American Bumblebee! I thought "it's too bad I can't report all of this to JN", but turns out I absolutely can, so here ya go!
