Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 02/11/2008

Number: 1

The robins have been down here, in not quite the numbers as last year, but certainly in abundance. When they first arrived last October they were still singing but now they are doing their usual whinnies, calls, etc. I see a good number moving around my area and into my yard every day, in the 100-200 range. But today presented a very interesting scenario! I saw two birds fall from the tree across the street onto the ground. I figured it was a pair of cardinals. NO! It was a Northern Mockingbird and an American Robin locked in a territorial fight!! In truth it was only the mockingbird concerned about territory as they are already courting. The robin was an incorrectly perceived enemy since they don't even nest in this part of Florida. The robin returned to the tree and the mockingbird came across to my side of the street in a huff. Lots of fun to witness this kind of behavior.
