Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/20/2008

Number: 1

We've seen a fair number of over-wintering monarchs along the Gulf coast below Tallahassee this year. And every once in awhile we've seen a few in Tallahassee, about twenty-five miles inland. Seeing monarchs along our coast has been a fairly common occurrence over the past seven or eight years, but we rarely see them this far inland during the winter months.
I made a positive count of seven one Sunday in January while I was at the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, which is on the coast south of Tallahassee. Other folks, who know their monarchs, have also reported seeing them down there. And I saw a positive two on the northern edge of Tallahassee three weeks ago.
