Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 02/11/2008

Number: 1

First robin see this spring was in a crab apple tree. I made a positive ID of the bird. It was not singing. Normally the first robin is seen in this area around March 15. This bird was over a month early. Have seen one other robin on April 15 during the great backyard bird count. This one was singing.

This robin thing this year leaves lots of questions. I have record over the past 20 years of the first sighting of robins in Central Montana, and the earliest was March 11. We have had a cold hard winter. There have been some warm fronts move through our area, but then it snows and gets very cold. This week the temps are in the 40’s but by Sat and Sun. it is going to get cold and snow again. On the day my classes went our to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count, the morning temps were in the upper 20’s and by the end of the day we reached 35 degrees.
