Barn Swallow (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/27/2008

Number: 1

Dave S and I went birding in So. St. Pete today, braving the
frequent
arctic blasts (well, okay..as arctic as Florida gets, that is).
Highlights
were: Eastern shore of Lake Maggiore - couldn't locate the No. Pintail drake
(the
lake was full of whitecaps with the winds today), but a Barn and Tree
Swallow kept us amused.

We watched the Barn and Tree Swallows for a good 5 minutes or so, and
since
it was just the two of them, I feel quite comfortable with the
i.d....the
dark blue-black back and orange undersides on the Barn Swallow making a
very
easy contrast between the two birds discernible. The weather that day
was
atrocious....winds so gusty and temps dipping low enough to make our
eyes
water and noses run! There were whitecaps on the lake then, and
precious few
birds around, most remaining in good cover around the perimeter of the
lake.
This was around 10:00 a.m., eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, temp about
45
degrees, wind gusts easily to 25 mph, if not more
