Noticing several species of returning migrant ducks - ring-necks, redheads, lesser scaup, hooded merganser, american wigeon, coot - on our 11 acre lake in central Ohio. Canada goose population has dropped, indicating they may be moving north to Lake Erie to stage for their flight to James Bay in Canada.
Noticing spring changes in Canada goose behavior - increased grazing on land, increased "loafing" on our island rather than out on the ice, and protective behavior by males towards their mates - no mating observed yet, but expected any day now.
