All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 02/23/2008

Number: 1

While visiting Blue Spring State Park near Orange City, saw that only a handful of West Indian Manatees were left in the spring...the water temperature of the St. Johns River is now warm enough to accommodate the manatees both day-and-night and they feel little need to return to the spring to 'huddle'.

Also heard birdsong galore our first hour at the park (it was early, around 8AM). Many Carolina Wrens, Northern Cardinals, and Northern Parulas were singing their hearts out, and several Red-bellied Woodpeckers were 'churring'. All music to my ears!

Walking along the beautiful boardwalk leading up to the spring head, saw my first-ever wild Carolina Jessamine blooming...loved it! Spring has definitely sprung in north-central Florida...
