German birder Birger Teetz and I saw seven groups of California Gray Whales off the Monterey coast this date while driving down the 17 Mile Drive, including a mother and calf. We also saw a pod of 100 porpoises. It was a gorgeous day, with temperatures in the low-mid 60's (F). They were swimming westward, away from the coast. We did notice the size disparity. I remember one or two groups of whales going south that day, but assumed most of them were going north that time of year. Reading up on the migration now, I was probably mistaken.

After confirming with Birger: "As far as I remember all of the whales were heading south.
The large school of dolphins we saw were heading north."
